The Border(s) Issue
If we have no borders, we have no country.
Our current border policy is ineffective, un-enforced and hypocritical. We must allow people and cargo to cross our borders for legitimate reasons, and not block them with red tape. We must also stop dangerous people and cargo effectively.
One of the few Federal constitutional responsibilities is to defend our nation and our borders. At this time in our history, a time of wars, we must be even more vigilant. Grant will vote to maintain high levels of military spending and support for our honorable troops.
Non Enforcement and Broken Promises
Straight Talk
Most Americans want a secure and orderly border. The primary reason we don't have one is because Congress and the President have undermined the laws and their enforcement. This has been done for two main purposes: one, to provide low cost labor to agriculture, (in the beginning at least) and two, to pander to Hispanics. In both cases, re-election and money were the primary motivation for the lawmakers.
We also know that Congress has failed to keep its promises in the past. In 1986 we had a 'compromise' amnesty and law enforcement initiative with promises of a change, but things have only gotten worse. My opponent, Lloyd Doggett has and will continue in that failed tradition.
Legitimate Border Functions
To Serve Citizens, Business, Immigrants and their Families
America has benefited from immigration in the past, and will continue to do so. America seeks to offer citizenship to people who love our founding principles and wish to become Americans. Additionally there are times when the economy can benefit from temporary foreign workers. Finally, America offers refuge to our fellow humans beings abroad that suffer under profoundly oppressive and, or murderous regimes.
Border(s) Security
The Right of Self-Defense.
Any nation must be whole unto itself. Borders exist to demark the boundaries of the sovereign expression of the ideas of a people. "Good fences make good neighbors" is a saying well understood by farmers and property owners.
Trespassing, destruction of property, and danger to citizens cannot be justified within the rule of law. Entry of terrorists, criminals, and foreign agents must be punished and strongly defended against.
The desire of people to come to America for whatever reason, cannot be the overriding factor in our immigration policy, and certainly can't require us to leave our border undefended.
